Shade Structure Steel Specifications

All Shade Structures are engineered and designed to meet a 90 mph wind load.

STEEL

a. All our connections have a maximum internal sleeving tolerance of .0625 inches utilizing high tensile strength steel sections with a minimum sleeve length of 6 inches.

b. All non-hollow structural steel components of our shade structures comply with ASTM A-36. All hollow structural steel components are cold formed, high strength steel and comply with ASTM A-500, Grade C. All steel plates comply with ASTM A-572, Grade 50. All galvanized steel tubing are triple coated for rust protection utilizing an in-line electro-plating coat process. All galvanized steel tubing are internally coated with zinc and organic coatings for maximum corrosion resistance.

c. All steel components of the shade structure are designed in strict accordance with the requirements of the ‘American Insitute of Steel Construction” (AISC) Specifications and The ‘American Iron and Steel Institute’ (AISC) Specifications for Cold Formed Members.

FASTENERS

a. All stainless steel bolts used in our shade structures comply with ASTM F-593. All the bolt fittings include silicone gel for water right seal at joints. All nuts used comply with ASTM F-594.

b. All structural field connections of the shade systems we manufacture are designed and made with high strength bolted connections using ASTM A-354, Grade B or SAE J249, Grade 8.

WELDING

a. All full penetration welds of our shade canopies meet the requirements of IBC 1006.

b. All shop welded connections of the shade system are designed and performed in accordance with the requirements of the ‘American Welding Society’ (AWS) Specifications. Structural welds shall be made in compliance with the requirements of the ‘Prequalified’ welded joints where applicable and by certified welders. No onsite or field welding shall be permitted.

POWDER COATING

Powder coat colors available:

 

a. Carbon structural steel tubing preparation prior to Powder coating are performed in accordance to commercial blast cleaning SSPC-SPB. Surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, mill scale, rust, coaling, oxides, corrosion, products and other foreign material.

b. The powder used in our powder coat process has the following characteristics:

a. Mass loss during cure: less than 1%

b. Maximum storage Temperature: 80 degrees F

c. Specific Gravity: 1.68 +/- 0.05

d. Theoretical Coverage: 114 +/- 4ft2 /lb/mil

c. The galvanized steel tubing preparation on our steel prior to powder coating is performed in accordance to solvent cleaning SSPC-SPI.

d. Our powder coating is sufficiently applied with a minimum 3 mils thickness, and cured at the recommended temperature to provide proper adhesion and stability to meet salt spray and adhesion tests as defined by the ‘American Society of Testing Materials.’

TENSION CABLE

The tension cables on our shade structure tops are determined on calculated engineering load.

For heavy loads: ½” and 3/8″ (nominal) galvanized 7×19 cables to be used.
For light and medium loads: ¼” (nominal) galvanized 7×19 strand cables to be used.
